2006-11-14 - suite life it is so cold and dark and blustery up here. and i imagine it will stay this way for the forseable future. or 'til spring at least. playing right now is currituck co. it is not to be forgotten how good this music is. it is perfect. it is hard not feel humbled by kevin's prodigous genius. just such amazing songs, never mind the guitar. glasgow is offering up many musical delights over the coming months, and wallet withstanding i will hopefully get to see MV EE and the bummer road, ben kweller and a whole heap of others. i need to make a new record this very second or my head will implode. i have never had so many songs i want to record. water, wolf and indeed trapdoor. |

2005-11-24 - Yacht Rockin been back from america for a short while after some great shows! solo show in SF was brilliant, with Gary Olson playing with an all star line-up (including yours truly, sean from the awesome Still Flyin' Alicia and Yoshi from Aislers Set and Therese from Jens Lekmans band) along with a short set of cover songs by Jens Lekman, who stood in at last minute for the now defunct Mosquitoes. Met lots of good folks there and generally had a blast. The Pantaleimon show also went well...Dri's voice was more beautiful than ever, and save for some monitor issues it was our best show yet!!! Current were top, as was six organs (good to see ben and stephanie!!!), simon finn, baby dee. An incredible set my maja elliott on saturday too...someone convince this woman to make a solo record! my personal highlight was the mighty OM, who pummeleed us with bass heavy drone metal on both nights...pretty fucking heavy dude! Then after a brief yet expensive trip to amoeba i flew to new york, where i had the pleasure of playing with neil cleary, who debuted some wonderful new songs and also Zeke Healy, who was not only a total sweetheart, but also one the greetest performers i have seen for some time! i sat in with him the following evening at another show he played. we did an improvised instrumental, then he backed me up on a version of Jamie...good times! spent quality time with my good pal Rats in NYC and also met a couple of wonderful new people...since being home have seen Of Montreal, which rocked, Dirty Three which emoted and last night we went to see Currituck Co and Antony and the Johnsons at the beautiful York Opera House....a great evening. KB was on top form, and it was a treat to hear him play the little heard Fathers Day; one of the most beautiful songs you are likely to hear! Good to hang out and see amy and kb...too brief! catch antony and kb on jonathan ross this friday... so lastly some thanks...to gary, alicia and maggie for opening up their homes to me and to david and dri for making this last trip possible...much love!!! |

| |
2005-08-10 - a bunch of stuff and nonsense and a list of things i did its been a while since i wrote on here so i will try tobe concise and fill in some facts and whatnot....the tour was good...we had some factors working against us that i will not go into...and the car broke down TWICE so we had to hire two seperate rental vehicles...fun times! bart was a trooper as was tour mascot jamie crewe...the heat was intense - 113 degree in bakersfield, where we played in a food court of an old shopping mall...bizarre...SF was great and we got to play with the great finger picker Sean Smith - you should get his record...it's on isota records...check it. all in all a good time was had and we met some great folks and stayed with some very generous folks who gave up their floors and coffee for us for no apparent reason other than they were good people! and we appreciate it!!! much vinyl was purchased...some choice nuggets from the berkley amoeba...good hanging out time in new york too...seen some good movies - 'me and you and evryone we know' was incredible...loved it! go see it...the new myazaki was good, tho convoluted and i must admit i didnt mind war of the worlds or charlie and the chocolate factory...back to the real world right now, with temp jobs and bills replacing car journeys and scenary...oh well...looks like i will be heading back soon...too tired...all the news is on the news page...so more soon...please come to the josephine foster, mi and l'au show that i am playing on monday in sheffield...thankyou!!! oh and the picture on the left is haggis...finest dog in the land! |
| |
2005-05-23 - goats at the sage the show at the sage went well...james green, jamie crewe and myself played three songs off the upcoming 'goat' record, and one improvised piece for autoharp, harp, whistles and guitar. we played in the smaller of the two rooms, and it seemed to go down pretty well. this was our first show doing this material, so all in all a resounding success really. the sage is an amazing place...looks like a big silver slug. we were treated like kings too...our own dressing room (initially next to jandek's, but we all had to move round so he could have his own corridor!) and we were treated to an amazing three course meal (though we had to leave the coconut cheesecake half way through so we could set up!) and as much wine and beer as we could wish for (which was surprisingly very little actually). everyone who worked there was lovely and the whole day was a surreal blast. jandek's set was great...very different from the last one. he played for about an hour and a half, and though i recognised various lyrical motifs, i think it was all new stuff...it was pretty intense. spoke with richard youngs after and he showed me his fingers and they were red raw from his bass...the things we do for art...so another success for mr esson. hope it happens again...today will see jandek perform again in glasgow...have heard it will be a pretty special show by all accounts...talk of him playing a piano is unconfirmed at present...in other news, a few people have enquired about getting a hold of the upcoming tour CD...i will keep 10 aside for sale through this site, so if you want one drop me a line. those who have already done so will have one reserved til i get them all done...there will be only 50 copies of the CD...as with 'the goat'...righty-ho, better... |
| |
2005-05-19 - moving moving house this weekend and am currently surrounded by boxes of junk. the gig should be a blast this weekend...feel excited to be playing alongside jandek...never thought THAT would happen...we are on around 8pm on the second stage. hope a few you can make it. oh and here is something you all need to know about - VETIVER & CURRITUCK CO. UK/EUROPE tour...this should be awesome. kevin and otto are opening the shows, then micah p. hinson is playing, and then vetiver. you can get the dates from the C.Co page (on the links page here). currituck is also opening for smog on most of his UK dates, so that is not to be missed too...back to the packing. music recommendation for you before i go - weird weeds - awesome band from texas, who just sent me their new record...their site is www.weirdweeds.com - check it! |
| |
2005-03-21 - neck again my neck has been causing problems again...which has seen me laying down on the floor with my head supported by a copy of 'please kill me' and 'our band could be your life', at the reccomendation of my mother. alexander technique. it works too. So as you probably know by now the US tour is taking shape...money and shows permitting we should be on the road by the end of summer...if anyone wants us in your town then drop us a line! initial plans are to hit new york, athens, nashville, chicago (this is not in geographical order by the way), boston, burlington...and seven shows on the west coast...i am very keen to play eureka again, as i had a great show there a few years back with of montreal...good people and place! the album is more than likely back from the plant (is it a plant?) a i type...imagine badman will have them to pre-prder by mid april, if you are that way inclined. two good movies coming out soon...mean creek, which is kind of like stand by me meets deliverance and features the great josh peck...and tarnation, which though in my opinion deeply flawed, it is still a pretty awesome film. certainly never seen one like it...so you may want to check them out...or not. and of course the life aquatic was brilliant. as was hitch, which you will no doubt not believe me about! oh and lastly, if anyone can help me out with this...i need good quality scans of the first two tour CDs i released...i sadly dont have copies of them anymore...so if anyone has one then could you please email it through the contacts page...thanks. ok that's it for now. guess its too late to see hanson...probably for the best. will see y'all at the joanna/6organs/white magic show in leeds perhaps? |
| |
2005-02-21 - gadzooks have been super busy of late...things getting hectic. many trips to london and birthdays and visitors etc. but the good news is that the new album is in the hands of badman, and should be mastered and ready to be made/built as you read this...which is exciting, no? trying to figure out a US tour for summer...if anyone can help with this then please drop me a line...may end up just playing the two coasts, but would like to venture inland too...hopefully try and make it out to europe too at some point later in the year too...seen some good shows of late - 6 organs in london was wonderful...and plush too. you may want to check out the new issue of comes with a smile for an interview with liam hayes that yours truly conducted...check the links page for the cwas address if you dont know it...will be seeing low play this week (on my birthday) and also beginning full time employment again - yikes! all good though...parted with far too much money for access to vincent gallo at this springs ATP...excitement also. what else? not much...oh yeah, contributing a track to a new compilation coming out on Fractured Discs, who are based in North Carolina...they are lovely folks and their pervious releases have been great...it is a brand new song recorded this winter. if you havent got the antony album yet, go get it now! oh and if anyone wants to come see hanson with me, then drop me a line... |
| |
2004-12-23 - so here it is... merry christmas...hope everyone has a wonderful yuletide love jw |
| |
2004-11-25 - movement its been a long time, i shouldn't have left you, without a dope beat to step to...the album i believe will be done by the end of the month, or at least by christmas...have been very busy with school and moving and what not. seen some great shows, including two trips to joanna newsom, both of which were sublime as usual. new songs too...one of which was very sad. both were brilliant and really long. which is a good thing. there is a great week of shows in nottingham soon...go to www.damnyou.co.uk - they have jackie-o motherfucker, sunburned hand of the man, sunn 0))), dean roberts etc...oh and lightning bolt too...its like ATP except about a million times cheaper and easier to get to...thats if you live near nottingham of course...so i have changed the title of the album too...but i wont say it here, otherwise i will look even more stupid changing it again! haha...currently listening to robert wyatt. |
| |
2004-10-30 - almost so the record is nearly finished and will be once gary returns from the owl sanctuary...some excellent ryhthm was provided by the wonderful otto hauser, who is a true saint, wizz on the drums and all round great guy! he plays in the band Espers, which everyone should listen to...anyways, record is taking shape and is sounding great...i will put an out-take or two on here over the next few months...more later |
| |
2004-10-23 - tomorrow recording on the provisonally titled 'With Neil & I' album begins tomorrow...with just me actually. other participants of the next few days will be julia rydholm from ladybug transistor, neil cleary from neil cleary, kevin barker from currituck co & gary olson from fleetwood mac. also jamie will be on hand to do whetever it is he actually does...so for now, thats that. |
| |
2004-10-23 - pain in the tooth so todays pain is tooth related...achey. makes my head hurt too and my eyes...jesus! whats wrong with me? two hours later... |
| |
2004-10-20 - clanky janky ...just got to brooklyn and are in a sleep deprived state of calm...playing the piano and figuring out what to do with the rest of the day...oh and it seems the world now knows of our amazing jandek sighting! hahaha...look out for me and a couple of others chanting jandek down the front on the DVD (!!!) release thats imminent... |
| |
2004-10-19 - tomorrow ...we head away for the making of the album...hurrah! totally underprepared and overwhelmed...still recovering from the weekend too...have a million things to do, so i bid you all farewell... |
| |
2004-10-15 - back in the USofA soon to be back in brooklyn after a long time gone...if anyone cares, back is little better, though slightly worsened by running for a bus this morning...sure will be fine. dosed up on painkillers again. listening to may i sing with me whilst reading about singing in the rain. instal this weekend....excitement! was reminded of a time when i drunkenly attempted to steal a bass guitar thrown into a crowd...i ended up with 2 black eyes in the morning... |
| |
2004-10-11 - pain inthe back morning all...am suffering from rather annoying back pains at the moment. was folding my laundry and *pop* i felt a weird pain, and am now in rather a lot of discomfort. plan on dosing up on medicine and not jogging today...but i do have a hectic schedule, so we shall see how i fair come the evening...hope i am ok before NYC...i am listening to the charlie brown christmas album in my bedroom...next saturday is the instal festival in glasgow. if you have nothing planned you should go - this year the wonderful barry essen and co have got a whole heap of great bands playing - my highlights will be six organs of admittance, richard youngs & current 93. sadly we shall only be makng it to the first day...the second day has vajra, stefan basho-junghens and derek bailey among others... |
| |
2004-10-08 - inspiraled so my six months draws to a close...i am now a free agent (work-wise only i'm afraid boys and girls!). i again extend my services as a brilliat employee...gentle, diminutive, relaxed and keenly dressed. talking of keane, it looks like my last musical moment in this office will be the horrific blandness that is hopes and fears....if you don't know what that is, then god bless you...keep it that way. i shudder...has anyone seem my ibook? someone emailed me offering encouragement, which i thought was sweet... |
| |
2004-10-07 - cheeky beak time trundling along sleepily...silent in the office. i really had hoped to never hear the keane album again, yet upon returning from a pointless trip to town, sure enough there it was on...bedshaped. i hate it. i really hate it...not sure quite why i hate it so...insipid bollocks. blah blah blah...tomorrow antony is playing at tonic in NYC with kevin barker on guitar. antony has the voice of an angel and kevin is an actual angel, so it promises to be great...and by gosh, i wish i could go! dammit! and i will miss the antony show in london as it is the day we fly back from (guess where) NYC! better run... |
| |
2004-10-05 - soft boy tuesday morning and i begin my last week at work, which is pleasently worrying...oh well. tonight i play with robyn hitchcock...i can never remember where the y goes...does it go there at all? hmmm...i will have no CDs to sell tonight, which is very annoying, but i will bite my tongue about that. the feral children album is also now (probably) in limbo...we shall see. but the good news is that it lookd like neil cleary will now be along for the ride on my new album...time permitting he should be popping in for a couple of days...i am currently listening an album by Maritime which is brilliant...you may like it. sounds like the housemartins, and matt dornan agrees! which is a rare thing indeed. i leave for new york in just over 2 weeks...vetiver is playing when we are there which is lovely, as are wolf eyes, which is not lovely but equally enticing. apparently not even 100 people would want to buy feral children...which is saddening. we (again) shall see... |
| |
2004-09-27 - TOUR ONLY CD meant to say that someone is selling a copy of my instrumentals tour only CD...(from the Sixth Great Lake jaunt from last October) on ebay...they are all gone...so perhaps this may be of interest.... |
| |
2004-09-27 - dragging on ah. so i am still sat here feeling like a goon...shame. lazily looking for something else. can't muster the energy really as my nose is full of goo...which always happens before i make a record...just to make things easier. perhaps i should just leave...and go back to bed. |
| |
2004-09-22 - WILL WORK FOR FOOD Anyone got a job i could do? criteria...
flexible interesting exciting fun in sheffield amazingly well paid not in a bank
thanks james |
| |
2004-09-08 - records ...looks like i will be recording with gary olson and kevin barker in brooklyn in october. i am pretty excited about this, as you can imagine. in case you dont know, kevin is currituck county. he is an all round guitar god, and has played with everyone who's anyone in the new folk scene! gary is the main man from ladybug transistor, and he will be producing the whole shebang...he also co-produced prospect park. i have about 30 new songs that i am attempting to whittle down to around 14. so we shall see! oh and apologies for listing sigmatropic as a comp (which it kind of is)...i will now re-list it as a guest appearance. hardly the crime of the century, but it did seem to annoy a couple of people! today i should be in the countryside, sat by a river and dozing off to sleep... |
| |
2004-09-04 - weekend as usual the wine is flowing, and my head is hanging heavy...but all is good. fell asleep to the trickledown theory...LP today by sunburned, which was pleasant. 2 new demos recorded in last 2 days, ready for the next LP which is almost written...looking to record in a couple of months time...it's got a name but i am keeping it hidden. hope the sky is blue tomorrow...hope the day is warm...hope the sleep is good...hope your day is full of love |
| |
2004-09-03 - being assertive on a friday its the end of the week, and it's fruits remain sour; good news and other things - ramblings. nothing to do but be busy doing nothing. fillin' up an empty hour. whatever... |
| |
2004-09-02 - useless it's official - i am useless. looks like the aarhus show will probably not be happening. what a stressful time of late...i offer sincere apolgies to everyone involved and wish them all the luck in the world with the festival... |
| |
2004-09-01 - chris thompson so i won that record i was harping on about - chris thompson s/t on village thing. despite a last minute bid from someone, i was the victor! hurrah! i am very happy about this...thankyou mr barker for your gentlemanly behaviour! its lovely blue skies here today, and it was cool and springlike on the way to work...wishing i lived in the countryside...apparently there is an article on joanna newsom written by dave eggers in the guardian today...hejira is on the office stereo. not quite the same as driving thorugh a desert...almstead at the wheel... |
| |

| |
2004-08-26 - cordewd huseo through the gift of the interweb i have managed to get i touch with someone much thought of and sadly missing...but now i find he's rockin to heino & gristle and but 1 hour away! hurrah! show tonight with james gree, who i am excited to see. his new CD is great. it's called tempers and you should all buy it! follow the link on the, er, links page to his label early winter recordings...record still being won. it shall be mine! tital lack of sleep has manifested into intense paranoia now, which is annoying...more coffee needed...xhol. |
| |
2004-08-25 - oops after making monumental cock ups at work coupled with a lack of caffeine this morning, there is nothing left to do other than sod the diet (begun on monday by the way) and have a slice of pizza for lunch. excited by a record on ebay at the moment, but i'm not gonna tell you what it is incase you all bid on it! |
| |
2004-08-24 - new songs some new songs were mixed last night, but due the limitations of my i-book, i have been having to sacrifice old songs in order to mix new ones...so ladies and gentlemen, please say a fond farewell to the forever unreleased classic 'Worry and Woe (NO!)', a ditty of such gargantuan (sp?) shitness it makes me sad to have lost it forever! maybe a rough mix of it will appear on disc 8 of my exhaustive anthology series in years to come...anyways, 2 new songs were mixed...and they are sounding good. i am in a sleepy daze as usual, but this morning we have 'vintage violence' by john cale on the stereo...good work. |
| |
2004-08-23 - improv made it to derek bailey, which was great. in the sheffield institute for the blind. DB had a blind basoon/sax player with him - pretty impressive. amazing drummer too. weekend was relaxed. today the mood is calm but sleepy, with the grey northern sky looking cosy from the harshly lit office surrounds...its silent too, and the coffee has yet to arrive. just put ylt on the stereo and already the day is better... |
| |
2004-08-20 - last night feral show was good, with one long droney song; about 20 minutes, which meandered along nicely. pelt should sue! haha...was also woken up at 5am by a stranger standing in my room! very odd...from the party that raged downstairs one assumes. as such i am very tired...may have to forsake derek bailey tonight for some rnr...photos were taken of the show which i will put on the site soon as i get em... |
